Drunk IL Man Crashes Boat Into Another Boat … Decapitating Woman

(This guy has totally screwed up soooo many lives with his desire to be the big man on the lake with all his toys and doing it while intoxicated.)

A crane company executive has been charged with homicide after allegedly operating a boat while intoxicated and crashing into another boat, killing a female victim, on the Fox River near McHenry Saturday.

MCHENRY, Ill. (WLS) — The man accused of causing a deadly boat collision on the Fox River over the weekend appeared in court on Monday for the first time as prosecutors detailed the events leading up to the crash and his prior history of traffic-related offenses.

Richard Stevenson, 45, faces three felony charges, including reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence. A judge ordered Stevenson detained as the case moves forward.

During the court hearing, prosecutors outlined a timeline of events leading up to Saturday’s collision. They alleged Stevenson was operating a 30-foot pontoon boat under the influence of alcohol at 80 miles per hour before striking another boat on the river, killing one of two people on board.

“It’s terrible,” neighbor Jane Sexton said. “It’s horrific. It’s a tragedy. It’s not just the people that were on the boats.”

Security footage from a home along the Fox River allegedly showed the pontoon Stevenson was driving Saturday afternoon. According to the family that provided the video, their cameras captured the pontoon traveling south on the river and then, about an hour and 45 minutes later, heading north. About a minute later, they said they heard the collision.

Richard M. Stevenson, 45, of Lisle, was charged with one count of reckless homicide and one count of aggravated driving under the influence causing a crash involving great bodily harm.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District and McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded around 2:30 p.m. Saturday to the 1800 block of South Fernwood Lane in unincorporated McHenry for a report of a boat crash.

Fire crews arrived and found a crash involving two boats on the Fox River south of the McHenry Dam after receiving multiple 911 calls about the incident.

An occupant of one of the boats was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Chris Kozel said.”

“The Illinois Department of Natural Resources Police arrested Stevenson and transported him to the McHenry County Jail on the felony charges, jail records show.

Bystanders said the two boats were both traveling north on the river when the bigger boat was speeding and ran over the smaller boat in a no-wake zone.”

“Another video, recorded as a child played on nearby swings, showed the pontoon passing by at 12:40 p.m., nearly two hours before the crash.

Prosecutors said Stevenson’s pontoon entered a no-wake zone and struck the rear of a green Crownline boat. A woman seated in the passenger seat of the Crownline was driven over and decapitated, prosecutors said. Her husband was taken to a hospital.

According to prosecutors, the pontoon came to rest on a riverbank, where a witness on Riverside Drive found Stevenson. He was later taken to a hospital, where a blood draw allegedly showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.20, which prosecutors said was 2.5 times the legal limit.”
